The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami, designed by Grimshaw Architects, is a stunning architectural ensemble that spans 250,000 square feet across four distinct buildings. The museum’s design takes full advantage of Miami’s natural elements, with its open-armed stance welcoming the city’s plentiful sunshine and ocean breezes from Biscayne Bay. The buildings are arranged to create a campus-like setting, encouraging exploration and sparking connections between visitors and the science within. The architecture features a soft white color palette, expressed through a variety of materials that create unique patterns and shadows across the facades, enhancing the visual appeal. The planetarium, a 67-foot diameter sphere, serves as a focal point, its self-supporting precast concrete structure inspired by natural forms like the Giant’s Causeway. The North and West Wings, clad in faceted, pixelated geometrical textures, allow sunlight to animate the buildings throughout the day. I captured Dimensionally Challenged in 2021.
